ANALISIS SIFAT PENYERAPAN AIR KOMPOSIT SANDWICH POLYESTER DENGAN CORE BONGGOL JAGUNG DIPERKUAT SERAT DAUN NANAS DAN SERAT BATANG PISANG
Water absorption is done with ASTM C - 272. With the variation of fiber volume fraction of 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 % and 30 %, and also variations of the direction of unidirectional fibers, woven and random. Where the test specimens were weighed with a digital scale with a precision of 0.01 grams and then the specimens were kept for 7 x 24 hours, after which the composite is weighed again to determine the percentage of water absorption of the composite. This test is also accompanied by density test and swelling test to measure the volume of the composite using a caliper with an accuracy of 0.05 mm. The size of specimens in this study is the length of 80 mm, a width of 80 mm and a thickness of 12.7 mm for the skin and core size corncob 30 mm. The results showed that the water absorption of the composite is shown by changes in weight, swelling and density of the specimen, where water absorption is affected by the fiber volume fraction, the direction of fibers, fiber type and the interaction of three factors to these variations affect the absorption of water, but the water absorption is dominant influenced by the fiber direction than another variation factor. The largest percentage of water absorption occurs in the volume fraction of 30% with the direction of fibers woven in the amount of 38.86% to 33.69% banana stem fibers for pineapple leaf fibers in the same volume fraction. Similarly, the highest swelling occurs in composite sandwich with a volume fraction of 30% in the direction of fibers woven in the amount of 16.45% for banana stem fiber and 11.02% for pineapple leaf fiber. In contrast to the gravity of the composite at 30% volume fraction has the smallest value that is equal to 18.61% for banana stem fiber and 19.93% for pineapple leaf fiber.
