Perbandingan Sifat Mekanik Campuran Epoxy dan Variasi Filler dalam Lingkungan Basah

Muhammad Mirsodi Idris - Nama Orang;

Epoxy is a thermoset synthetic products of the reaction of polyepoxy resin with a hardening
agent. Epoxy is widely used as a matrix fiber composites, adhesives, and coatings. The purpose of
this study is to determine the effect of immersion specimens from a mixture of epoxy and filler
variation on the water absorption and its mechanical strength (tensile strenght, stress intensity factor
and impack strenght).
The main ingredient of this study is filler (fly ash, pumice, CaCO3, glass and cement), epoxy resin and
epoxy hardener. Composites were made by mixing the filler and matrix resin. Mixing is done by using
a modified mixer for 2 hours to be evenly mixed or homogeneous. This mixture was mixed again with
resin hardener and stirred for 3-4 minutes. Then the mixture was poured inserted into a mold. The
experiment included water absorption test, tensile test (ASTM D 638), the stress intensity factor test
(ASTM D 5045-99) and impact test (ASTM D 256).
The results show that the moisture equilibrium content from the highest to the lowest is a
specimen with filler of fly ash, cement, glass, CaCO3 and pumice, respectively by 2.82%, 2.47%,
2.46%, 2.27% and 2.04%. The water absorption in the specimen affecs the mechanical strength of
the specimens. For the tensile test and the tensile strength decreased significantly as a result of
immersion for filler fly ash, pumice, CaCO3, and cement respectively by 18.62%, 14.79%, 14.54% and
11.03%, while the decrease of tensile strength for the glass filler is not significant. For stress intensity
factor (KIC), the immersion reduce the KIC significantly for fly ash and glass filler respectively 16.44%
and 34.85%, while to the pumice filler, CaCO3 and cement the effect of immersion is insignificant. For
specimens with fly ash, CaCO3, and cement, filler immersion improve significantly the impact strength
respectively by 39.76%, 37.21% and 24.96%, while the specimen with glass and pumice filler
immersion has no effect on the impact strength of the specimen.
